I was never much of a reader until I ran into a book in Junior High that captured me in a way that none had before (and really few have since).  Many others had this experience too and the movie was soon out in the early 80’s.  The book has continued to become a classic and a standard for Junior High English classes.  The book is “The Outsiders”.  It presented a gang type world very different than the one I lived in, but the characters and circumstances were so relatable it seemed to be a description of me (and my reactions/thoughts) in that setting. 
As I have matured, the Bible has become a similar book for me.  I see myself in the stories and the teaching.  I resonate with the characters of the Bible as they navigate the circumstances of their world.  The follow up book to “The Outsiders” is called “That was Then, this is Now”.  In this book author S. E. Hinton takes the reader to the next chapter in these maturing characters’ lives.  I like that title as a theme for us moving forward from one year to the next.  And I also see the theme in the Apostle Paul’s letters as he challenges himself and his readers into an ever maturing faith.
