"Live as children of light (for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth) and find out what pleases the Lord."
-Ephesians 5: 8b - 10
I keep thinking about the scene in Bruce Almighty where Bruce (Jim Carey) and “God” (Morgan Freeman) both say “It’s good”. If you’ve seen the movie that phrase might be stuck in your head too. Now when and if God actually says “It’s good” that means something. That means it’s the best. There is no bad, no evil – just goodness.
“Goodness” is our topic for this Sunday and it makes me consider what it means to demonstrate “goodness”. This seems to be the exact opposite of a culture that tends toward thinking of balancing things out. Like we do a little “bad” and then offset it with a little “good”. It seems that often we really just don’t want to be that good. What can it mean for us to fully live into the goodness character God wants for us?
