“In you our fathers put their trust; they trusted and you delivered them.”
“It is for freedom that Christ has set us free.”
What is the first July 4th you remember? It seemed like when I was a kid here in Martinez we would always have a carnival in town near the marina (basically that big open dirt area across from the amphitheater, but the area has changed some since the 70’s) for July 4th. I have a strong memory of throwing coins to try to win some piece of glassware that it would bounce into (for some reason “ash trays” seemed to be big back then.) I have a scene in my mind like a Norman Rockwell painting of the people, the greasy “Carny”, the glassware all stacked in the middle and the marina in the background. I love that picture.
Of course later in the day more would gather (like we still do today) for the fireworks after the darkness would fall. You know new and wonderful memories will be created on July 4 this year for some children and for all of us.
