"May your unfailing love be my comfort, according to your promise to your servant."
I've always relied on the book of Psalms for my own comfort. Perhaps it's a bit of a cliche, but almost any situation I'm wrestling with can be addressed in some way or another by opening to the middle of the Bible. I love its poetry and flow, but also its realism as I see the Psalmists face the same fears and uncertainties that I encounter in life.
In the Hebrew tradition, the book of Psalms was never so much for study and academics as it was a book of devotional hymns. They were used for meditation, community worship, and of course, for comfort or encouragement. That's why I have always felt it important to keep an understanding and memorization of verses and chapters in Psalms on hand in my regular prayer life with God. The tricky part is choosing a favorite!
This Sunday we'll be looking more at this wonderful book of passionate dedication to and trust in God.
